Specialized 2010 Mountain Line

July 16th, 2009 No comments

Snowbird day 4.  Beautiful weather, scenery and riding.  Spent the better part of a day riding the latest and greatest in the 2010 mountain line.  My biggest takeaway – there is something for everyone from tight race bikes to long travel fs bikes to a full range of 29ers…thats right, a full range of 29ers, starting at $550 hardtail and going up to 29er Epics, Stumpjumper FSR’s, Stumpjumper carbon hardtail and Stumpjumper carbon hardtail single speed…all with big wheels!

There’s a ton of new stuff, heres some of the highlights.  All Stumpjumper FSR and Epic get Fox rear shocks.  Specialized and Fox teamed up to deliver a redesigned FlowControl Mini Brain so you still get the performance of the Brain.  The Stumpjumper FSR gets a complete redesign and goes to 140mm travel front and rear and climbs and descends better then ever.  The biggest news (in my opinion) is the attention to the 29er market where there is now a full line of hardtails, full suspension race bikes (Epic), full suspension trail bikes (stumpjumper FSR) and…an s-works Stumpy carbon hardtail 29er with Sram XX tipping the scales at 20.7 lbs!  Want a superlight carbon single speed?  Check out the S-Works Stumpy carbon hardtail with ss dropouts and custom ebb – you can build your own sub 19lb single speed!

Specialized 2010 Road Line

July 16th, 2009 No comments

For 2010 Specialized has made a number of changes in their road line.

In the Tarmac line the S-Works SL3 (FACT 11r IS construction, carbon bb shell, 1.5 lower headset) is now the top of the line and is offered in a number of configurations – Di2, Red, DA 7900 and as a frameset and a module.  The Tarmac SL frame (FACT 10r carbon IS construction, 1.5 lower headset) has trickled down into the Tarmac Pro which comes with either Red/Force or DA 7900/Ultegra, and Expert which is spec’ed with Ultegra.  The Comp (FACT 8r carbon monocoque) is offered with Rival or Ultegra and the Elite comes with 105.

The Roubaix line is topped of with S-works SL2 (FACT 10r IS construction) with DA 7900.  The SL frame (Fact 9r IS construction) trickles down through the Pro in either RED or DA 7900 and the Expert with Ultegra.  The Comp (105 or Rival) and Elite (105) have the FACT 7r monocoque frame.

New this year is the Secteur – Roubaix’s little brother.  Same geometry and key features as the Roubaix, but at lower pricepoints.  The Secteur Comp comes with a E5 aluminum frame with carbon seatstays w/zerts and is equipped with a 105 group.  The Elite has an A1 aluminum frame with 105, and the Sport shares the frame and comes with a Tiagra/Sora mix.

The women get an all new platform, the Amira, which is a women’s version of the Tarmac.  Its an all out, no compromise race bike.  It comes as a S-Works (FACT 10r IS construction) with DA 7900, or as an Expert or Comp with a FACT 8r IS frame and Ultegra or 105 respectively.

Specialized 2010 Tarmac SL3

July 16th, 2009 No comments

I sat though a few hours of classroom style presentations of Specialized’s 2010 road product followed by the remainder of the day riding the 2010 road bikes.

At the top of the line is a completely redesigned Tarmac SL3 with a frame weight of 870 grams (56cm).  Specialized has gone to a one piece chainstay/bb piece with a full carbon bb with ceramic bearings.  This increases stiffness while shedding a few grams.  There is also a newly designed hollow box alloy dropouts that are lighter and stiffer than carbon dropouts.  The seatstays have been redesigned as well to add stiffness while also giving more compliance to the rider.  I did a great ride on the SL3 from Snowbird 8 miles straight down into the valley hitting speeds close to 50mph and the bike handled incredibly.  Once in the valley we rode for about an hour on some rolling terrain and again the bike delivered, it rolled smooth and any time I accelerated all power generated snapped forward with no loss of power.  The ride ended with an 8 mile climb back up the mountain and the SL3 was up to the task.  It was a tough climb, I settled into a comfortable pace and rolled right up the mountain with all power to the pedals pushing me straight up whether I was seated and spinning or standing and powering up.  Great ride, great bike.
