Last night we launched the 2009 Eddy Merckx bike line at Carolina Bicycle Company with all of the new models on hand and none other then the man himself there to give everyone a night to remember. What a night! Hundreds of people came out to CBC South to meet Eddy, have their picture taken with him and have him sign a jersey, hat, sign, book or bike. One came all the way from Ohio and I talked to a few from Atlanta, Raleigh and Asheville. it was a good thing the rain held off, as the line to get in was out the door and across the parking lot all night long.

The evening started with Eddy talking about his career…in a time before cyclists specialized in the classics or grand tours. These were days where you did them all – spring classics, grand tours, Six-day’s, hour records. Racing on the road and the track. Racing anywhere and everywhere, whenever he could. His favorite race? Liege Bastion Liege. Did you know that Eddy had several years where he raced over 150 races in a year? Yes…over 150 in a year. It gets better, his winning percentage in 1971 was 45%! Yes, he won almost half of the races he entered. Incredible. Eddy was great, talking to everyone, answering question after question and laughing and joking with the crowd…and enjoying a glass of wine or two.
After the evening had wound down a few of us joined Eddy for dinner at Stratos’ newest venture, Big View Diner in South Charlotte. Is was opening night and Stratos and Angelo were on hand to oversee the first night with customers and took very good care of us. Dinner was great – the food and the company. We heard more great stories and even got to see Eddy perform slight-of-hand magic!
A very special thanks goes out to Giorgio, Sandy and Theresa at Gita for making it all happen. Also thanks to Chris Baker for playing photographer and sommelier.
Join us for a new Saturday ride starting at CBC Huntersville at 8:30am. It is a 30ish mile ride, No-Drop that averages around 17. We’ll head up toward Davidson and back.
